'HENRY PARKINSON graduated in 1764 from the COllege of New Jersey
(later to become Princeton University). Although he had been destined
for the ministry, he decided that he could not in conscience become an
elder of the Presbyterian church; instead he stayed on as a teacher at the
college for 9 years. Returning to Londenderry, N.H., he enlisted in the 1st
N.H. Regiment (Captain John Stark) and served at Bunker Hill,
Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and Trenton during the War of the American
Revolution, resigning his commission as lieutenant and quartermaster of
the 5th Continental line in 1777 because of ill health. In 1778 he
married Jenett McCurdy and farmed at Francestown, N.H., later removing
to Concord, N.H., where he conducted a "select, classical school for young
gentlemen"; Daniel Webster is said to have been among the pupils
prepared for college there. He moved the school north Concord to
Canterbury, N.H., in 1800 and remained there until his death, becoming
known as the "Schoolmaster of Canterbury".'
